In 1914, “Shounien” was built in Los Angeles to protect and nurture young Japanese children. The founder was a man by the name of Kusumoto Rokuichi who was a native of Oita prefecture, Japan. One of the girls who was brought there (an orphan of an immigrant) had severe burns on her hands and strap marks around her arms from being tied up for a long time. Rokuichi names her Yasuko and adopts her. Being rescued from such a horrendous experience, Yasuko grows up, moves from Los Angeles to China during the Sino-Japanese War. She opens another “Shounien” in the suburbs of Shianghai. Now we are able to read this story that was buried in modern day history – A story of a father and daughter who poured out their lives for this life-changing cause. We recommend this book especially to Japanese Christians who currently live in the United States.
