Where did Valentine’s Day come from? In the 3rd century Roman soldiers were forbidden to marry. But Pastor Valentine believed marriage was important and married some soldiers to their brides. He was martyred on February 14. People remembered him for his stress on the importance of married love and made valentines to express love on that day. The custom came to Japan in 1930 and chocolate as a valentine gift began in 1970. But what is real love? The Bible teaches “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; It is not arrogant.” But we do not really love that way and so we sin. The Bible also says “Greater love has no one that this, that someone lay down his life ofor his friends.” When I ask couples who want to marry if they would give their lives for the other, most have never thought that far. But one person did love that way. The Son of God Jesus Christ died on a cross in the place of all people. “While we were still sinners Christ died for us.” He was our substitute taking our sin punishment.(Isaiah 53:6) If we believe in Jesus then the Holy Spirit gives us the power to love others. (1 John 4:19) So pray and confess your sin to God and ask Him for help to love others. Quit selfish living and believe and follow God and you will become a person of love. Sample prayer of decision. Read the Bible and pray and join a church. God who always loves you will not just give you a Happy Valentine’s Day but a Happy Valentine’s Life.
